Helen Lester is a Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist who has worked for the NHS for over 17 years, and has had a multitude of experience in helping people work towards their individualised goals. She developed a special interest in Pilates after first-hand experience in her own injury rehabilit... ation many years ago. After practising Pilates for many years and training with the APPI (Australian Physiotherapy & Pilates Institute), a world leading provider in rehabilitation Pilates, she now runs small Pilates groups that allow close attention to technique, personalised feedback, and the ability to tailor classes to groups of individuals within the local community.
Pilates is a form of exercise that focuses on balance, posture, strength and flexibility. It is suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels. The classes are based around a matwork programme, with exercise also performed in standing. The Physiotherapy-approved repertoire means each class, at whatever level, will allow to you to practice Pilates with the confidence you will safely achieve your rehabilitation or exercise goals. Pilates can be physically challenging and mentally relaxing. Our matwork classes are both dynamic and enjoyable, and with a maximum of nine people per class, you will benefit from individualised feedback. If you are new to Pilates / exercising, we recommend that you work at a level that feels comfortable to you, and then you may progress to challenge yourself further as you gain confidence in the programme. You will improve your body awareness over time: always listen to your body and how it feels, and ask for advice and feedback as we go along. As these classes are run by a registered health professional (Health and Care Professions Council) they are particularly suitable for people with aches and pains, although many of our clients are fit and healthy and simply prefer the close supervision offered.
You should wear comfortable clothing that will not restrict movement, socks are recommended. All equipment needed is provided but you may wish to bring a small hand towel and a drink. Our mats are thick and comfortable. Chairs are available if some support is required for balance or to get up from and down to the floor.
